Why Do Microwave-Safe Ceramic Plates Get Hot?

When you microwave your food, why does the plate get so hot even though it’s labeled microwave-safe? This is a common point of confusion, especially with artisan ceramic dinnerware.

Let’s break down why this happens and how to safely handle your handcrafted plates and bowls in the microwave.

“Microwave-Safe” Doesn’t Mean “Stays Cool”

The label ”microwave safe” doesn’t mean that the plate stays cool after the heating process. It simply means the ceramic won’t break, get damaged, or leak harmful materials when exposed to microwave energy.

Most ceramic items will still absorb heat or become hot from contact with the food inside them.

Why Do Ceramic Plates Get Hot?

Several factors can cause microwave-safe ceramics to heat up:
    •    Moisture trapped in the clay body
Even high-quality ceramics can retain small amounts of water — especially earthenware — which absorbs microwave energy.
    •    Dark or mineral-heavy glazes
Some pigments (especially darker colors) retain heat more than lighter ones.
    •    Thickness and density
Handmade ceramics tend to be thicker or more variable in structure, which can increase heat retention.
    •    Heat transfer from the food
If you’re microwaving soups, sauces, or anything with fat or water, heat often transfers to the plate or bowl itself.

But Isn’t That Unsafe?

Not at all. As long as your item is microwave-safe (as ours are), heating up is normal and not harmful. The ceramic won’t crack or leach materials if used properly. Just be careful when touching it, as it may be hotter than expected. The use of oven mittens is recommended.

How to Microwave Ceramics Safely

To keep things safe and comfortable:
    •    Use shorter heating intervals (30–60 seconds)
    •    Let the item rest before removing it from the microwave
    •    Avoid sudden temperature changes (like placing a hot dish on a cold counter or heating it directly after coming out of the freezer)
    •    Always use oven mittens or a cloth to handle hot ceramics
